  The national currency of Eritrea is the Nakfa. It was introduced in 1998 and has been named after the Sahel mountain town that served as the headquarters of the EPLF during Eritrea’s struggle against Ethiopian occupation. The 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1 Nakfa notes were designed by the African American Clarence Holbert and printed in Germany. The Commercial and the Housing bank provide exchange services for various currencies, but many people preferred the better rates provided by the official exchange offices which is why they may have been closed by the authorities. The only one left is the government owned Himbol Exchange. There are a few jolly moneychangers hanging around near and on Harnet Avenue. Naturally they offer the best rates but are 100% illegal. The _moral argument against using the black market money changers is that you are cheating the government of Eritrea out of valuable hard currency in order to make your (cheap?) holiday even cheaper."
